CAP 5TH Grade Lesson III: Tobacco and Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems

I. OVERVIEW
Nearly 9 out of 10 smokers start before the age of 18. Studies show that if people have not started smoking by the time they are twenty-one years old, they probably won’t start.

In the past, prevention programs have tried educating high school and middle school students about smoking. What they found was that, in many cases, they were too late. By the time the children got to middle and high school, even if they hadn’t tried smoking yet, they had already formed their attitudes about smoking.

Due to the public health initiatives, education, age requirements, and changing social norms, cigarette smoking is decreasing in the United States. However, the tobacco companies have found a new way to be profitable – Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) otherwise known as vapes. While vapes do not contain tobacco, they do have nicotine, which is highly addictive, and many other chemicals that have been known to cause health issues. Vapes are heavily marketed to young people and appeal to kids because of the flavors. Studies have shown that kids who vape have an increased probability of using traditional cigarettes within a short period of time.

Today’s lesson allows students to experience some of the basic effects of cigarette smoking. Students will get to see how smoking causes the disease emphysema and what the lungs of a smoker look like. These activities are designed to give students first-hand knowledge of how tobacco and nicotine affect the body. In addition, this lesson will provide up to date information about vaping and how it is not a safe alternative to smoking cigarettes.

CAP will provide parent letters outlining today’s lesson with resources for smoking cessation. Click here for the parent letter in English and here in Spanish. Click here for the full 2018-2019 5th Grade Schedule.
