Sharry Booker: Coalition Member Spotlight
This quarter’s coalition member spotlight is on Sharry Booker.
Sharry Booker is a volunteer in CAP’s Pulaski Street School Prevention Program. She has been involved in the Riverhead Community Coalition since 2023.
Spreading Positivity in the Community
Sharry volunteers for CAP’s flagship Pulaski Street School Prevention Education program. Volunteers provide evidence-based lessons on social-emotional skills and substance use prevention to all 5th and 6th-graders in the Riverhead Central School District. The program is taught monthly by community volunteers and peer leaders from Riverhead High and Middle schools.
Sharry’s commitment to the community shines through in and outside of the classroom. Her positivity is truly infectious. She is always there to lift others, showing that sometimes a smile, a hug, or a few encouraging words can go a very long way.
Riverhead Community Coalition Coordinator Chelsea Shuren recently sat down with Sharry to talk about her experience with the coalition. Here are the highlights:
WHY DID YOU JOIN THE COALITION?
“I joined the Coalition after retiring from Seafield Treatment Center, where I worked in inpatient rehabilitation for 23 years. Because of that, I feel there is a strong need to educate children not just at home but also in the community.”
FAVORITE COALITION ACTIVITY
“My favorite activity is being a CAP Volunteer for the Pulaski Program. I enjoy educating the students about substances and think that it’s important to educate them as early as possible so that the information sticks with them throughout the rest of their lives.”
THREE WORDS/PHRASES TO DESCRIBE YOURSELF
“Joyful, dependable, and kind.”
BESIDES COALITION WORK, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO?
“With Spring approaching, I am looking forward to being in my garden and walking around Glenwood Village to see the beauty of nature. I also enjoy baking tasteful cakes because life should be delicious!”
