Medication Drop Box

According to the CDC, one in five teens have taken prescription drugs without a doctor’s prescription and each day more than 2,000 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time. In most cases prescription medication is easier to obtain than street drugs as the majority of teens get them from family members, friends, or in the home. To reduce prescription and over-the-counter medication abuse, the Riverhead Community Coalition for Safe and Drug-Free Youth partnered with the Riverhead Police Department to install a Medication Drop Box in the lobby of the Riverhead Police Department in August 2014. As of October 2015, we have collected 822 pounds of medication and kept them out of the hands of youth.
